What are implants?

An implant is when a titanium screw is surgically placed into the jaw bone. Once the implant has been placed it is left for up to three months for the bone to fuse around the implant. Once the implant is stable after the three or so months, a crown, bridge or denture (depending on how many implants you have) can be made to fit on the implant. Implants can be used to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth. Also used to stablise a denture especially on the lower jaw.

What are implants?

An implant is a post – usually made of titanium – that is inserted into your jawbone. Over time this post will fuse with your jawbone and create a strong foundation for your teeth.

A connector is then placed onto the post. This is what secures the crown to the post. Each crown is made to match your existing teeth as closely as possible, so no two crowns are the same.

What are the benefits?

Implants are an option that provides a natural looking tooth that functions just like a normal tooth would. They are built to last a lifetime with only periodic adjustments – no need to ever replace them. They are also healthier for your remaining teeth, as a bridge or partial denture will wear and grind at any existing teeth whilst an implant will not.

Because implants are built to resemble your original teeth, they will not change your face shape or the look of your smile like some dentures or bridges can. There is no need to worry about dentures slipping or falling out, and you can care for them just as you would your other teeth instead of having to keep your teeth in a cup!

Without teeth, your jawbone can deteriorate or develop other health issues. But an implant prevents those issues from happening. They are also strong enough that you will never have to worry about biting or chewing hard or sticky foods, and always stay in place whether you are eating, speaking, kissing, laughing or sneezing. You will never have to worry about your teeth falling out again.

What are the types of implants?

There are two types: Endosteal and Subperiosteal. Endosteal are placed directly into the jawbone like a small screw and are the most common type. Subperiosteal are placed under the gum but above the jawbone. This type is used more commonly with those who have a shallow jawbone and do not want the surgery to rebuild it.
